A dancer and costume designer for the San Francisco Ballet in the 1940s and 1950s, Russell Hartley established the San Francisco Dance Archives in 1947. Now known as the Museum of Performance + Design, the collection that he diligently began includes 3.5 million items documenting the performing arts in the Bay Area and elsewhere.
